Spring Has Sprung, Time to Start Fishing

It's that time of the year! The snow is melting, the weather is warming up, the grass is turning green, and oh yeah, It's the best time of the year to fish! After being cooped up during the cold, there's no better time to get outside and start fishing. On top of that, early spring is the prime time to catch some big fish right after the ice melts. So, let's talk about what you can catch, and where the best spots in Colorado are to fish!

What Kind of Fish Are In Colorado?

There are many different species of fish in Colorado's streams, lakes, and reservoirs, but what should you be trying to catch in spring? Try to focus on rainbow, cutbow, and brown trout in early spring as they can be larger right after winter. Also, it's the absolute best time to try and catch lake trout also known as Mackinaw. Colorado Mackinaw can reach upwards of 50 pounds! Now that's a challenge worth going after! so now that you know what to go after, where should you go?

Colorado's Best Fishing Spots

There are 6,000 miles of streams and more than 1,300 lakes and reservoirs in Colorado. So where do you start? Here are my recommendations.

Lake Granby

Lake Granby is the second largest reservoir in Colorado, but that's not what makes it a great fishing spot. Lake Granby is one of the best Mackinaw fisheries in the entire country! Now that's a title! It's also an excellent place to go after rainbow, cutbow, and brown trout.

Stagecoach Reservoir

Stagecoach Reservoir is not only an exceptional place to fish for trout, but it's also a great place to camp! Think about making a weekend getaway with an Outdoor AdVANture van (which can fit all your fishing gear comfortably by the way). Stagecoach Reservoir is the perfect place to start off spring with excellent fishing and some fun camping. There are also great places to fly fish at Stagecoach as well if that's more your thing!

Ridgeway Reservoir

Who doesn't want a great view while fishing? Ridgeway Reservoir offers some great fishing of rainbow trout, brown trout, kokanee salmon, and yellow perch. However, this area has some beautiful scenery and amazing campsites! There's nothing better than fishing with some mountains in sight!
